Natural Awakenings Magazine: OKC PERMACULTURE by Beth Davis

For Oklahoma City resident and local Green Realtor, Michelle Hines, having a permaculture yard is a way of life for her and her family, not just a system they have in place. “It means taking care of my family, being self-sufficient and caring for the Earth—and it’s something any homeowner can do.”

I thought it was a really fabulous concept but it wasn’t until early this morning that I discovered the foundation behind that campaign. Here is a little info on how YOU can help your local economy. There is a link in my side bar that takes you to the 3/50 Project so spread the word!

It’s not often that I see people commuting by bike or foot in Oklahoma City, though I believe this will become more commonplace as our city increases bike lanes and sidewalks. According to Walkscore.com, Oklahoma City has an average walk score of 42 with zip codes 73102, 73103, 73106, 73118, 73104, 73139, 73112, 73107 and 73109 with an average score of 50 or higher.

What if I told you that you could support local economy and save money at the same time? Well, you are in luck because you can! 2011 marks the second year for Keep it Local OK, a program dedicated to “promoting the locally owned and independent business that make Oklahoma great.”

I frequently visit Energystar.gov because of its fabulous tips on ways to save energy (translation: money!) and all of the resources it provides on the materials and appliances that will help you along that path but last night when I went on the Lorax appeared at the top of the page. Like most, I cannot resist Dr. Seuss so I clicked. I had no idea that Energy Star had an entire kids site. Did you?
